This depends heavily on your accommodation, lifestyle and how much you want to travel. Your regular expenses will include rent, groceries, transport, phone costs and everyday activities. I recommend creating a separate travel budget on top of your normal living expenses, as weekend trips and activities can quickly add up.

You don’t necessarily need your own car, but having access to one makes exploring New Zealand considerably easier. Public transport is available between many major destinations, but some beaches, hiking trails and more remote places are difficult to reach without a car. If you’re staying for several months, buying a used car or regularly sharing rental costs with friends can be worth considering.

Pack for changing weather rather than just one season. Comfortable everyday clothes, good walking shoes, layers and a waterproof jacket are particularly useful. You don’t need to bring everything from home, as most everyday items can easily be bought after arriving. If you’re planning plenty of hiking and outdoor activities, bring appropriate clothing and footwear as well.

If you have the choice, I would recommend staying for as long as your studies and budget allow. One semester gives you plenty of time to experience student life and explore parts of the country, while a full year allows you to settle in properly, build stronger friendships and travel much more extensively. Whichever option you choose, the time will probably pass faster than you expect.
